Lady ALTAS down Bombers to secure F4 spot

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA entered the Final Four anew after trouncing Jose Rizal University (JRU), 25-13, 19-25, 25-21, 25-14, in Season 94 National Collegiate Athletic Association women’s volleyball tournament on Thursday at the FilOil Flying V Center in San Juan City.

After squandering a one-set lead, the Lady Altas bounced back in the succeeding sets behind Cindy Imbo to seize the last semifinal spot. It was their sixth win against three defeats.

It was also the second straight Final Four appearance of the Las Piñas-based squad.

Perpetual Help will face top seed and twice-to-beat holder College of Saint Benilde in the opening game on Tuesday.

Imbo posted a game-high 18 points built on 14 spikes and four service aces to spearhead the Lady Altas’ balanced scoring.

Bianca Tripoli chipped in 14 points while Shyra Sumandal and Jhona Rosal added 13 markers apiece for the Macky Cariño-mentored team.

Dolly Versoza paced JRU with 17 points highlighted by 15 kills, as Karen Montojo emerged as the only other double-digit scorer with 11 markers.

Coach Mia Tioseco’s Lady Bombers fell short on their return bid to the Final Four as they closed the season with a 4-5 record.

In the men’s division, defending champion Perpetual Help cruised straight to the finals after sweeping the eliminations. The sweep was concluded with a dominant 25-21, 25-21, 25-13 victory over JRU.

Ronniel Rosales and last season’s Rookie of the Year-MVP Joebert Almodiel exploded for 14 and 12 points, respectively, as the Altas posted a perfect 9-0 slate.

The Bombers ended their campaign with a 2-7 card.

In juniors play, reigning titlist Perpetual Help also earned an outright berth in the finals with a 25-13, 25-17, 25-11 win over JRU.

The Junior Altas swept the nine-game elimination round while the also-ran Junior Bombers wound up with a 3-6 sheet.
