UPHSD Marks 50th Anniversary with Historic Space and Marine Technology Breakthroughs

The University of Perpetual Help System DALTA (UPHSD) proudly celebrates its 50th founding anniversary with landmark achievements in space exploration and marine science—reinforcing its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and global collaboration.

In line with its golden jubilee theme, “Celebrating Diversity, Altruism, Leadership, Technology, and Adaptability,” UPHSD unveiled two pioneering projects that position the institution at the forefront of scientific advancement in the Philippines.

Project DAGAT: A First-of-its-Kind Technology in the Philippine Tsunami Detection

Developed by UPHSD faculty and students in Las Piñas, Project DAGAT (Deploying Acoustic Guardians: Advanced Tsunami Detection) is the first locally engineered system designed to detect tsunamis and storm surges. The device transmits real-time data via nanosatellite and terrestrial networks and is currently undergoing pilot testing in Cavite. The project took 2.5 years to develop and represents a major leap in disaster preparedness and marine research.

Perpetual Satellite-1: UPHSD’s Entry into Space

On October 26, 2025, UPHSD successfully launched its first nanosatellite, Perpetual Satellite-1, from Japan’s Tanegashima Space Center aboard JAXA’s H3 F7 rocket. Scheduled to enter low Earth orbit in early 2026, the satellite will collect imaging data for marine traffic monitoring, greenhouse gas detection, and tsunami surveillance—complementing Project DAGAT’s capabilities.

Perpetual Satellite-1 is the first nanosatellite launched by a private Philippine university under the ASEANSAT Consortium, in partnership with Universiti Teknologi MARA (Malaysia), King Mongkut University of Technology North Bangkok (Thailand), and Kyushu Institute of Technology (Japan).
